The aim of this symposium is to explore every aspect of the "new economy" of the U.S. from economic and historical perspectives. We are also thinking of the need to compare American experiences with those of other countries including Japan. The new economy may bring us a new kind of prosperity based upon network and IT revolution. On the other hand, it may worsen our anxieties on the side of the core of white collar workers because job securities enjoyed by mass production workers for a long time in the age of old economy seems to have gone.Under these circumstances we need to contemplate completely new ideas about our jobs, our lives and the role of governments. Apparently we must allocate more important roles to various intermediate organizations, such as NPO, NGO, and local communities.
